8/5/15: Fjord-tastic!

Day 7 - Wednesday, August 5

After a limited amount of sleep... the morning started with a fried egg sandwich in honor of my dad. He's the one that taught me to make them so inhale to give him props!

And another cup of that amazing tea!  Seriously delicious!!

We chatted with our hosts for a little bit again.  And of course we had to take a photo.... with them and their dog, who was so sweet!!  He jumped right into our picture and we were happy he did!

After we left our guest house, we reconnected with Diego!  Our guest house hosts talked us into taking the extra hour to drive the east Fjords. Very beautiful....  even though it rained like crazy.

Never a shortage of sheep...

At one point, we took a quick stop to take pictures of this orange lighthouse.  Diego sent the drone out to capture it up close and personal...  Can't wait to see the footage!

More of the drive... even when rainy and overcast... it's beautiful!

Never a shortage of waterfalls either....

During a break in the rain, we decided to make a pit stop hike to take in the Fjords up close and personal.   We drove over barbed wire to get there!  We did attempt to cover it and apparently it worked as no flat tires resulted from our escapades.  We did have some fun and get some great pictures during our stop though....

We had to cross a little river and hike up some rocks.  Another instance where Diego helped talk me through some of my fears.

Connie and Diego hiked to this little jettie...  It was a bit slippery and I decided instead of battling my fear of heights that I would relax, take in the beauty and take a few photographs of them...

This bird is called a Skyr.  It apparently is very protective and has been known to attack people.
Diego and I had a ball trying to capture a few pics... and avoid getting attacked!

Back to our sweet chariots....  (looks like a car commercial, doesn't it?)

Some of the sights along the way...

Three was a hike we wanted to do...  Skaftafell.  Although it was getting late, we still decided to stop and get the map.  At the information center, which I'm pretty sure was just some guys house, a somewhat scary blonde guy answered the door.  It was 8pm. He thought we were crazy that we were wanting the map and going hiking this late... he says "You're going now?  Most people start earlier." Drove road as far as we could to trail.

Diego almost got stuck when we got further up... so he backed it up and we parked to start our hike. The colors on these mountains was beyond amazing.  It was as if someone spilt their water colors....
These photos are cool... but it still does it no justice!

Timing was perfect to see the sunset. And oh my... what an amazing site.  These photos don't even do it justice.  It was so golden.  I felt like the sky's had opened up and I questioned if I was going to heaven. We were all speechless for a while.  There were several moments on the trip that it was hard to believe where I was and what I was seeing.  It was truly amazing.

The view off the other side of the path....

It started raining so turned around about 11:00.  Hard to believe this pic was taken at 11pm, huh?  Anyway... we decided to crack a beer open for the hike back.  Connie and I had to drink Viking beer... SKOL Vikings!

We drove a bit... we took what ended up being a scary road.... meaning very close to the cliff.  At night, it looked way worse that it was and it was pretty scary anyway.  We were going to go all the way to the top, but instead, we decided to stop, set up camp and enjoy a beer and some good company!  Cheers to our first night camping!  We all sat in the back of our truck for awhile talking and sharing music.

Who needs a tent when you have a Mitsubishi Outlander?

It was a pretty awesome night if I do say so!
