8/6/15: Mystical Beauty

Day 8 - Thursday, August 6

The morning arrives with an overcast sky, a chill in the air and bruises on the hips.  We laid down the back seat and called it our hostel for the night. It was a little on the hard side...  But worth it for the view in the morning.  You don't get this at a Holiday Inn!

Although raining...  we continued on with our plan of the day.  A drive to the Glacial Lagoon.  This is one of the things I am most looking forward to.  The pictures I've seen are amazing.  Can't wait... even despite the sputtering skies....  Our drive back through the crazy road in the morning didn't seem nearly as bad as it was in the dark while raining last night, but still a reminder that the roads were narrow and sometimes near a cliff.

And we can't forget the little rivers we have to drive through...

As we get closer.... the weather starts to clear....

We made it to Jökulsárlón, which litterally means "glacial river lagoon".  It is a large glacial lake on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park, which is at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier.  This is said to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. This lagoon is the result of a warming climate where huge blocks of ice are breaking off the glacier.

This was one of the moments where my breath was taken away.  The beauty of the natural wonder was almost paralyzing.  Words do not do it justice, nor do these photos.

Diego took out his drone to get some good glacier footage.  His intent was to fly it between two icebergs, but that was disrupted by some birds.  Although the footage would have been awesome... it wasn't worth a bird-drone collision.  The drone wouldn't have faired well in that battle.

I do realize there are a ridiculous number of photos here... and many look similar.  I guess I just couldn't decide between them.  And each brings me back to something different and unique I noticed.

After taking it all in... we decided we just were not ready to leave.  Instead, we decided to hike along the banks of the Lagoon toward the glacier in hopes to see some of these ice bergs breaking off into the Lagoon.  Each part of our walk was equally beautiful.  After about an hour, we decided to stop and take some photos....  shocking, right?  :)

Again... I LOVE catching people in their element or having a moment.... In the last one... he realized I was photographing him, so he threw me a little grin....

As we were walking... we felt like we should be getting closer to the glacier, but we couldn't see the end.  We all were getting hungry as we didn't prepare for a really long hike.  Diego decided to fly his drone a little, so Connie and I walked a little further.

We could tell we weren't really close and decided to turn around since it was getting late and we were all hungry.  On our way back, we caught Diego being creative again...

Diego also asked us to take a picture of him planking on a rock in the lagoon.  Apparently this is something him and his friends do when they are places.  Fun!  While he was getting prepared... I caught this....  LOVE!

And the plank....

On our hike back... we stopped once again.  The three of us decided to build a wish together.  We all took turns placing stones.  One of the top stones had a "bowl" in it.  We then decided to find a pebble that represented ourself.  We each spent a good amount of time finding the perfect one.  We didn't talk about why we picked each one.  We didn't feel like we needed to.  It was really quite a profound moment.  Here is Connie and me.  Once family...almost sisters... and 15 years later, we are still friends and "sisters".  Diego we have only known for 3 days, but fits like we've known him forever.  A friend. A brother. An angel.  To find people you connect with like this isn't a coincidence....

Feeling all nostalgic and spiritual... we also made our own wishes....
Mine....

We make it back to the Lagoon and of course, can't help but snapping a few more photos....

Still hungry... we decide to finally leave.  We drove to the nearest town to grab a bite.  What beautiful sites we saw along the way.... the sky was amazing...

We find a place to eat.  The restaurant was good. Connie and I each had a Greek salad and split a pizza with cream cheese on it.  Yummy!  We even had some to bring with us for lunch tomorrow. During dinner we also sketched out the rest of the trip and decided on an area to "camp" again. Another F road did not disappoint....
